New self-storage lien laws are now in effect in California and Illinois. Both provide the enforceability of unsigned rental agreements. They also establish processes for handling tenant property following the termination or non-renewal of the rental agreement, according to a Dec. 23 email newsletter sent from the national Self Storage Association (SSA) to its members.
In Illinois, the amendments to the law also recognize electronic rental agreements. In addition, they expand the existing towing option to apply to non-monetary defaults such as failure to maintain insurance on a vehicle, the newsletter stated.
The SSA represents more than 22,000 U.S. and international member-affiliated self-storage facilities, according to its website. It’s allied with several state and international self-storage associations and has about 6,000 members.
