Self-Storage Operators Offer Rent Postponement for Government Workers

Update 1/15/19 – Washington-based ABC Mini Storage has joined other local businesses in waiving payments due for government employees affected by the partial shutdown. Nearly 20 percent of the self-storage tenants at 7726 W. Sunset Highway in Spokane, Wash., are either active in the military or are government employees, according to Sherry Wolfe, senior manager.

“I’ve had two people as of yesterday that have taken up our offer. They were very happy; you know, very appreciative,” Wolfe told the source. “We’re not doing this to be thanked; we’re doing this because it’s our way to give back.”

ABC operates six self-storage facilities in the state including two in Spokane.

1/9/19 – Compass Self Storage, which operates 85 locations in 14 states, is offering rent postponement to tenants affected by the partial government shutdown. The deferment is available to government workers whose pay has been suspended for as long as the shutdown is in effect. Tenants won’t accrue late-payment fees as part of the special program, according to a press release.

"We are sympathetic to the difficult situation many government workers and their families are in, and we want to do our small part to help," said Todd Amsdell, president.

The partial shutdown began on Dec. 22. It affects about 800,000 employees in the nine federal cabinet departments as well as smaller agencies whose funding has lapsed. Approximately 380,000 workers have been furloughed without pay while the rest are working without pay until the shutdown ends, according to the source.

Compass is part of the Amsdell family of companies, headquartered in Cleveland, which draws its roots from the family-owned construction company founded in 1928. Since its inception, the company has been active in several billions of dollars of real estate ventures, with a primary focus on self-storage. It has owned and operated more than 500 storage centers under various trade names in more than 27 states. It currently owns and operates properties in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.
