Officials in Ravenna, Ohio, have enacted a one-year pause on self-storage development in the city. The moratorium applies to traditional self-storage facilities as well as permanent container storage. It doesn’t apply to temporary mobile-storage containers used by residents when relocating, according to the source.

The legislation will allow city officials to reconsider their zoning regulations. Storage projects that have already been approved won’t be affected. While no new requests are pending, city staff are fielding inquiries about vacant parcels in the town, according to Dennis West, economic-development director.

“A lot of these parcels are ones that we want to reserve for commercial retail,” he said. “We don't have a lot of available land, and we want something that will generate income tax for the city.”

The council has the option to extend the moratorium when it expires on March 6.
