Extra Space Storage Inc., a self-storage real estate investment trust and management company, is expanding its use of mobile-access technology nationwide through a partnership with Onity, a provider of electronic-access products and mobile credentials for self-storage and other industries. The companies collaborated to test Onity’s newly released Passport door-locking solution and integrate Onity’s DirectKey technology into the Extra Space customer-facing mobile app. The combination allows storage tenants to enter their units without a traditional lock and key, according to a press release. Trials have been completed at Extra Space facilities nationwide.

“By integrating Onity’s smart locks into our storage units and Onity’s DirectKey mobile-access technology into our customer mobile app, we're enhancing the tenant and facility-operator experience while increasing security, convenience and operational efficiency,” said James Hafen, vice president of product for Extra Space. “We look forward to bringing Onity’s Passport locking solution to additional locations in the future.”

During testing, Onity’s Passport solution was used for nearly 5,000 door openings, with the locks showing a reliability rate of 99.8% and overall system availability of 99.9%. Also, the projected battery life for the installed locks is more than five years, an increase from the original projection of three years, the release stated.

Founded in 1986, Onity also serves the education, hospitality and military industries. It’s part of Honeywell Building Automation.
