San Diego Self-Storage Facility Fends Off Homeless Trespassers With Loud Music
September 5, 2024
In an effort to keep homeless people from trespassing at its San Diego facility, self-storage real estate investment trust (REIT) Extra Space Storage Inc. is playing loud music there around the clock. The property at 3883 Sherman St., near the intersection of Interstates 5 and 8, is adjacent to a large encampment of transients living in tents. It’s become a problem for the operator, according to the source.
The deterrent music is blasted from outdoor speakers and is mainly classical in genre, according to “Lisa,” who lives in the camp. “It is aggravating. If they want to play a radio station with different music, that would be fine. But the way they are doing this is a form of torture,” she told the source.
In a statement, Extra Space emphasized its commitment to security for customers and employees. “After a few unfortunate break-ins from the back fence line onto our property causing damages, our team has been testing different security measures, including enhanced fences, enhanced lighting and cameras, the additional music, and more.”
The storage facility is near Maritime Institute, which has also had issues with the encampment. “They are stealing property from our training area. They are vandalizing our training area, covering it with graffiti. It is a constant battle,” said Maritime Institute CEO Dave Abrams.
Headquartered in Salt Lake City, the REIT operates self-storage facilities under the Extra Space, Life Storage and Storage Express brand names nationwide. Its facilities comprise 292 million square feet of rentable space in 2.6 million units.
