A new Vanguard Self-Storage facility being built in Portsmouth, England, acquired and will display a Harrier jump jet, a jet-powered military plane named after a bird of prey. It’s among the Navy’s last operational aircraft, according to Mike Lamplough, the company’s head of property. “It’s in excellent condition, and we intend to display the Harrier as it was on the day it was retired from active service,” he said.

The Portsmouth City Council recently approved the self-storage project, which will extend along Mile End Road, just south of Herbert Street. Prior to voting, councilmember Gerald Vernon-Jackson asked if the aircraft would rotate. Lamplough said the details haven't been finalized, but he liked the idea of hourly rotations to offer various views, the source reported.

“We will have viewing balconies inside, and we are very happy to welcome visitors, especially aircraft enthusiasts,” Lamplough added.

Vanguard previously attempted to develop the site in 2017, but its plan for a naval ship-styled building was rejected on appeal. The council and planning inspector both opposed it, citing concerns that the design, including a mock naval gun on the roof, would harm the Mile End conservation area and appear out of place.

This isn’t the first time Vanguard garnered attention for the unusual and historical items it displays at its self-storage facilities. The company was previously highlighted for an English Electric Lightning XP745 fighter jet that hangs in the atrium of its Bristol, England, facility. It also has a former RAF Hawker Hunter fighter jet on the roof at its Perivale, England, property.

Founded in 1964, Vanguard operates eight self-storage facilities throughout England.
