Going Beyond Units
NorthPoint Development opened Beyond Self Storage in Maplewood, Minn., in March 2018. It’s the fourth project from the firm since it launched its multi-facility development initiative in 2016. The facility, which took a year to build, comprises more than 100,000 square feet of drive-through storage space.
Sprawling in New York
A private investor recently nabbed this sprawling 4.5-acre property in Cambridge, N.Y. Located off State Route 22, Cambridge Valley Self Storage includes five buildings containing 95 drive-up units, a warehouse/shop area, and a 610-square-foot office. Rolling Out the Red Carpet
Located in an affluent suburb of Nashville, the aptly named Red Carpet Self Storage of Franklin, Tenn., offers an upscale experience. Building materials include porcelain tile, aluminum and nickel finishes, glass, and granite. Owned by Gary Pharo and his partners, the three-story facility comprises 68,811 square feet of climate-controlled storage space, a conference room and vehicle parking.
CubeSmart Makes a Statement
Henry S. Miller Cos. just completed this CubeSmart facility in Garland, Texas. The massive property along Highway 66 features two single-story structures and two two-story buildings containing interior and drive-up units, an office, and a manager’s residence.
Tick Tock Goes the Clock
StorageMart, led by the Burnam family, hit a huge milestone this year, reaching the 200-facility mark. The company is continuing its acquisition efforts, with the goal of owning 300 stores by 2021. Its portfolio consists of more than 12 million square feet. Pictured is the facility in Franklin, Ill.
Massive Flair in Little Havana
Value Store It Inc. recently opened this six-story facility in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami. The site has 114,576 square feet of storage in 800 units, with 1,800 square feet of retail space and a business center with conference rooms.
Ontario Welcomes UltraStor
UltraStor Self Storage made its debut in the Canadian self-storage market last fall. Its flagship property in Burlington, Ontario, comprises 57,105 rentable square feet in 460 units. Amenities include climate control, a drive-in loading area and an executive boardroom available for rent. The company has already begun phase two of the project.
US Storage Heats Up
Westport Properties Inc. has had a busy year! In addition to several acquisitions, the company opened this multi-story US Storage Centers in Miami. The company partnered with The Feldman Cos. on the development, which comprises a whopping 147,027 square feet in 1,200 units. The location is Westport’s seventh in the Miami market.
A Mile-High Beauty
This StorQuest Self Storage in Greenwood Village, Colo., is in the Denver Technological Center, a business and economic trading center spanning 850 acres and comprising more than 25 million square feet of buildings. The $14 million facility sits on 1.7 acres and offers 910 units. It’s one of 18 properties the company operates in the Denver area.
Striking a Pose in Santa Rosa
Located off the Sonoma Highway in the Rincon Valley neighborhood of Santa Rosa, Calif., the newly opened StoragePro is a standout on the block. Behind the striking main building, which includes a large office and climate-controlled units, the property includes large drive-up units.
A Southern Sweetheart
Morningstar Properties LLC opened this facility in the South End neighborhood of Charlotte, N.C., in 2015. The five-story property on the corner of Griffith and S. Tryon Streets is one of six the company operates in the city. The 100,000-square-foot facility contains more than 700 units.
A Monumental Site in Montreal
Montreal Mini-Storage Group acquired this site along with another in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from Dalfen American Corp. Together, the properties comprise169,000 rentable square feet in more than 1,300 units. This facility, in the borough of LaSalle, was transformed in phases between 2006 and 2009. A Mixed-Use Masterpiece
TD Self Storage is building this Life Storage in Greenville, S.C. Part of the West End Community Hub, the four-story facility will be built on nearly an acre. In addition to 107,000 square feet of storage space in 931 units, it’ll include 1,430 square feet of retail, 1,160 square feet of office space and 61 parking spaces in a basement garage. The mixed-use property will also feature band-practice rooms, co-working space and a rooftop event venue.
NSR Expands Down Under
Australia-based National Storage REIT is one of the three largest storage operators in the country, with more than 100 facilities, and another 13 in New Zealand. In January, the company announced its intention to raise $15 million through a share-purchase plan. Jenkins Expands in the Lone Star State
The Jenkins Organization Inc. is busy opening new sites, including Murphy Self Storage in Murphy, Texas, just one of four projects it’s opening in the greater Dallas area this year. Jenkins has also opened two locations in Austin: ATX Storage and Lakeline Storage.
A Colossal Canadian Project
Dymon Storage Corp. plans to open six new locations in Greater Toronto this year, including this massive facility in Ottawa. The 500,000-square-foot property will offer 3,000 units, wine storage, office and retail space, mailbox rentals, and security vaults. In conjunction with its wine-storage offering, Dymon will host wine tastings and employ a sommelier.

This Side Up
All Storage is introducing this unique “cardboard box” design at several of its new Texas facilities, including this one in Plano. The 40-foot-tall structure houses the facility office. All Storage was granted a Class 39 trademark last year for the building design.
Growing Up in Finland
Cityvarasto is steadily growing its portfolio to meet demand for self-storage in Finland, which has a population of just 5.5 million. Founded in 1999, the company is now the largest storage chain in the country, with 34 sites, including this one in Turku.
FollettUSA Enters Texas

Generation4 Partners LLC acquired two parcels last year in Miami comprising .56 acres on which it’s building a seven-story facility, shown here in a rendering. Located in the Allapattah neighborhood, it’ll comprise 143,080 square feet of climate-controlled storage and include wine storage. The project is expected to open in early 2019.
Life Storage Gains More ‘Space’
Life Storage Inc. purchased this Space Shop Self Storage in Metro Atlanta along with two others from Stein Investment Group last fall. A New Use of Shipping Containers

Storage Along a Scenic Corridor
Completed a little over a year ago, John Fayard Self Storage in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., has just about every amenity you can imagine, including a large conference room, a huge lobby with a retail center, climate control and wine storage. The site was honored earlier this year with a “Scenic Corridor Design Excellence Award” from the nonprofit Scenic Corridor Foundation.
A Stand Out in San Antonio
Hardy Oak Storage is in San Antonio, Texas, is another development by The Jenkins Organization. The property was chosen due to its high barriers to entry and excellent demographics, according to company officials. Jenkins has three acquisitions, seven new developments and five expansions underway, all in Texas and slated to be complete within the next year.

Kangaroo Hops Across the UK
Scotland-based Kangaroo Self Storage expanded its footprint across the United Kingdom when it acquired England-based operator Smart Storage Ltd. in April. The £13 million deal tripled Kangaroo’s portfolio to nine locations and boosted its total square footage to 442,000 square feet, with 310,000 square feet currently under lease. From Strip Mall to Storage
Metro Storage LLC turned this former strip mall that included a furniture store and health club in Skokie, Ill., into 83,000 square feet of storage space. Although it was a small lot, Metro made it work by raising the roof by 12 feet to accommodate a second floor and, in turn, created a distinctive exterior.

This Saf Keep in Oakland, Calif., is near the waterfront, just south of the Oakland City Center, the area’s business hub. The family-owned business employs service attendants in addition to its management staff. Saf Keep also features onsite consignment stores, hosts garage sales, and will even help customers sell their belongings on eBay.

Life Storage operates 18 properties in San Antonio, Texas, including this one on Wilderness Oak. Texas is a hot market for self-storage growth. The cities with the most development include Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.

Rosemurgy Properties and Sentry Self Storage LC partnered on this conversion project in Deerfield Beach, Fla., shown here in rendering. The recently opened two-story site sits on 3.2 acres and comprises 93,163 square feet of space in 726 climate-controlled units. Features include three freight elevators, a double-bay loading dock and controlled gate access.
In the Shadow of the Mountain
Business partners Dale Boehner, Nick Francis, Rob Stanley and Terry Wiedeman opened their first facility, Mountain Shadows Storage in Greeley, Colo., last summer. The 5-acre property contains more than 480 climate-controlled and drive-up units as well as vehicle-parking spaces. It also includes an RV-dump station.

A Rebuild in Oregon
West Coast Self-Storage Group demolished and rebuilt this facility in Beaverton, Ore. Three years in the planning, the redevelopment included the acquisition of adjacent land, the modification of existing easements, rezoning and entitlements. The new building comprises 51,680 rentable square feet of storage space in 546 units. It was designed by Mildren Design Group P.C. and constructed by SEA CON LLC.
A Smart Move for SmartStop
U.S.-based SmartStop Self Storage operates 11 facilities in Ontario, Canada, including this one in Mississauga. The company purchased the site in 2011 and conducted extensive remodeling and rebranding. The site includes 101,000 square feet of storage space in 800 units.
SoBe Opens in South Beach
The three-story Sobe Wine & Self Storage opened last year in the historic Flamingo/Lummus neighborhood of Miami Beach, Fla.
