A Sweet Site in Sugar Land
Prestige Self Storage in Sugar Land, Texas, a suburb of Houston, was sold to Store Space Self Storage in January. Built last year, the facility offers 976 indoor, climate-controlled and traditional units.
Inspired by the Community
National Self Storage opened this beauty a year ago in Marana, Ariz. It was the first multi-story, climate-controlled storage facility in Dove Mountain, a master-planned community about 40 minutes from Tucson. Designed by RKAA Architects Inc. and built by TLW Construction Inc., it comprises nearly 63,000 rentable square feet in more than 600 indoor units. The design reflects the history of the area. The 45-foot stone tower was inspired by the Kiva Room at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain, while the 28-foot blade sign is a nod to the historic Fox Theater in Tucson.
An Artistic Approach
Real estate firm World Class Capital Group LLC is developing this three-story Great Value Storage facility in Los Angeles. The 2.4-acre property is centrally located in the Chinatown neighborhood, north of downtown. Once complete, it’ll comprise 188,600 rentable square feet in 2,036 climate-controlled units and 53 covered vehicle-parking spaces.
Moving Into the Northeast
Charlotte, N.C.-based Go Store It acquired this newly constructed facility in Nantucket, Mass., in December. It was the company’s first acquisition in the Northeast. The property comprises 63,000 rentable square feet in 672 climate-controlled units.
Celebrating Historic Phoenix
Garfield Storage was designed to fit the Historic Garfield District of Downtown Phoenix, which is heavy with craftsman bungalows and historic homes. The variety of materials, colors, accents, awnings and glazing used create movement in the façade. Articulation is created by varying parapet heights and column pop-outs along the exterior. The earth-tone browns, grays, greens and reds are compatible with neighboring developments. The integral-founders finish block is used to create a traditional brick-veneer look. Morningstar Properties LLC, which operates the Morningstar Mini-Storage brand, purchased a trio of facilities, including this one in Lexington, S.C., from a London-based investment fund in late 2018. The portfolio, previously branded as Devon Self Storage, has a combined 216,542 square feet of storage. The facility was designed by Jordan Architects.
A Grand Presence in Charlotte
Morningstar Mini-Storage operates six facilities in Charlotte, N.C., including this one on Tyvola Road. Part of the commercial development City Crossing, it comprises 70,000 square feet in 691 climate-controlled units.
A Myrtle Beach Masterpiece
Outbox Self Storage, which also operates three facilities in North Carolina, opened this expansive facility in Myrtle Beach, S.C., nearly a year ago. It offers 75,000 square feet of climate-controlled and traditional units.
Going Solar in Rhode Island
BCPStor Development LLC built this energy-efficient CubeSmart last year in Cranston, R.I. The facility has insulated metal panels on two buildings and a rooftop solar-panel system on its three-story, climate-controlled structure.
Services Galore in Scottsdale
This Life Storage facility in Scottsdale, Ariz., isn’t just humongous, it offers several ancillary services, including wine and outdoor vehicle storage. Additional features include drive-through storage, document shredding, and a retail center that sells moving and packing supplies.
Smelling the Roses in Roseville
Extra Space Properties Two LLC, an affiliate of self-storage real estate investment trust Extra Space Storage Inc., purchased a two-property portfolio in California that included this All Size Self-Storage in Roseville. The expansive facility is just off busy Vernon Street, and serves residents in Antelope, Citrus Heights and Foothill Farms. The two assets—totaling 165,920 net rentable square feet in 1,109 units—were once a part of a larger portfolio owned by L.P.G. Associates Inc. of Rohnert Park, Calif.
On the Promenade
Real estate developer 1784 Capital Holdings LLC recently broke ground on this project in Scottsdale, Ariz. Scottsdale Promenade Self Storage will comprise 101,305 net rentable square feet, with three stories above ground and one below. Built on 2.52 acres near new residential development and retail, the facility is slated to open next year.
Simple Yet Striking
A West Coast investor recently picked up this former All Storage Northwest in Hayden, Idaho. The facility comprises 67,505 square feet in 500 units.
Dwarfing Competition in St. Augustine
Opened last summer, Atlantic Self Storage in St. Augustine, Fla., is just off Interstate 95. The facility is huge, comprising 237,265 rentable square feet in a mix of climate-controlled, drive-up and vehicle-storage units. Altogether, it offers 1,343 rentable spaces.

172nd Holdings LLC opened Cascade NW Self Storage in Arlington, Wash., last year. The facility comprises 57,784 rentable square feet in 562 units. It offers drive-up access as well as interior units, some of which are heated. The project was designed by architecture firm Moore Design Associates and built by Jason McDaniel of 172nd Holdings. West Coast Self-Storage Group manages the property.
Citadel Debuts in Nashville
Andover Management Group LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based real estate developer, chose Nashville, Tenn., as the site for its first purpose-built self-storage facility. Opened in 2016, Citadel Self Storage caters to the city’s growing urban population near downtown. It comprises more than 137,00 square feet.

The Jenkins Organization opened Storage Center at Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, last fall. The property comprises 95,462 square feet in more than 600 climate-controlled and traditional units.

Everything Is Bigger in Texas
SmartStop Self Storage acquired a six-facility portfolio in Texas last fall from Metro Mini Storage that included this large property in Katy. Constructed between 2002 and 2007 on 28.6 acres of land, the portfolio comprises 483,000 net rentable square feet in 3,400 climate-controlled and drive-up units as well as 200 vehicle-storage spaces.
A Tribute to Sci-Fi
Inner Space Stations Self Storage opened this conversion project in 2017 in Layerthorpe, York, England. The facility’s three floors offer more than 200 units. Company founder Graham Kennedy’s fascination with space and science fiction provided inspiration for the pop-culture memorabilia, including replicas of the TARDIS fictional time machine from the British science fiction television series “Doctor Who” and Stormtroopers from the “Star Wars” films. In addition, each unit size is named after a different planet.
More Than Storage
The Jenkins Organization opened Frisco Self Storage last fall in North Dallas. The two-building facility comprises 116,000 square feet of climate-controlled and traditional units. In addition, it includes 5,000 square feet of wine storage, covered loading areas, and a 1,300-square-foot retail office with a U.S. Postal Service and FedEx shipping center. The Future of Storage?
Dymon Storage is building this mixed-use development in Toronto that’ll include self-storage, office and retail space. Designed by TACT Architecture and Cumulus Architects Inc., the nine-story structure will comprise 32,899 square meters of storage. It’ll feature a glass-fronted central staircase extending the full height of the building. Storage areas not obscured by other uses will be finished with an opaque, insulated metal-panel system with horizontal ribs and vertical, pewter-colored fins.
Shining Bright in Uptown Charlotte
This five-story Morningstar Storage facility in Charlotte, N.C. comprises 110,000 square feet of climate-controlled storage. Designed by Overcash Demmitt Architects, the facility is near the LYNX Blue Line Extension light rail.
A Hometown Feel
Compass Self Storage, a member of the Amsdell family of companies, acquired this brand-new facility in Ponte Vedra, Fla., about a year ago. It’s near several colleges and local attractions including the Intracoastal Waterway. Compass expanded the site shortly after purchasing it.
Stepping Outside the Box
Citadel Self Storage opened nearly a year ago in St. Matthews, Ky., a suburb of Louisville. The facility sits on 2.5 acres that once housed a church, elementary school and daycare center. Comprising 145,000 over three stories, it offers 900 storage units as well as wine storage. It was designed by Louisville-based Potter & Associates Architects PLLC. The contractor was JM Williams Contractors of Marietta, Ga. The facility is owned by Andover Management Group LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based real estate developer.
A New Entry in the Garden State
Real estate investment and development firm Quinlan Development Group LLC is building this self-storage facility in Hillside, N.J. The property will comprise 1,162 climate-controlled and 41 traditional, drive-up units. Once open, it’ll be managed by CubeSmart, a self-storage real estate investment trust and third-party management company.
Paying Homage to Houston Sports
The Jenkins Organization opened EaDo Storage this year in East Downtown Houston. The property comprises 110,000 square feet in 850 climate-controlled and traditional units. Its design compliments the area, and the color scheme pays homage to the Houston Astros baseball team and Houston Dynamo soccer club.

Golden State Storage in Las Vegas puts great emphasis on its landscaping—and for good reason. Located on a busy street in a busy city, the facility focuses on color and design to catch the eye of passers-by.

Self-storage real estate investment trust Life Storage Inc. operates six facilities in Miami, including this one on 186 Terrace. All the units are climate-controlled, a bonus during the sweltering Florida summers.
A Southern Charmer
Dahn America360 Storage II DST acquired this former Sentry Self Storage in Athens, Ga., in 2016 and rebranded it as Mini U Storage. The property consists of nine buildings comprising 104,000 rentable square feet of storage space in 705 units, 323 are climate-controlled. Built in 2006, the facility was expanded in 2008 and 2011.
A Historic Conversion in Roanoke
Virginia Varsity Storage Inc. plans to convert the historic Graves-Humphreys Hardware Co. Inc. site in Roanoke, Va., into a mixed-use property that’ll include self-storage, office space and residential units. The 2.2-acre parcel contains five buildings and is home to about a dozen business tenants Virginia plans to incorporate into the new design. Constructed in the 1960s, the existing structures were originally targeted for self-storage, but the plan was expanded due to its proximity to River's Edge Sports Complex and a greenway system. Two of the buildings will be demolished to improve parking and access to the site, while the remaining structures will be refurbished. A new building adjacent to the sports complex will include four stories of self-storage, with 60 apartments wrapped around it on two sides.
Making a Statement in Miami
Storage King USA operates 17 facilities in Florida, including this beauty in Miami. Outfitted in the brand’s signature yellow, the facility is within walking distance to Zoo Miami and near Lindgren Road, a north-south boulevard in Miami-Dade County.
An L.A. Acquisition
Real estate investment trust CubeSmart acquired this Self Storage 1 facility in Los Angeles last October. The seller was Cardiff Mason Development of San Jose, Calif. CubeSmart owns or manages 1,086 facilities across the United States.
Stor-Age Reaches 50-Facility Milestone
Stor-Age Property REIT, which operates self-storage in South Africa and the United Kingdom, opened this multi-story facility in Bryanston, South Africa, last fall. It marked the company’s 50th location in the country. The property comprises 65,659 square feet of space in 610 units. Stor-Age now operates 20 locations and more than 1.3 million gross leasable area in the Gauteng region.
Blending With the Community
Advantage Self Storage Advisors opened this site last year in Flower Mound, Texas. Located in the Lakeside Business District, a large-scale commercial and light-industrial park, the facility sits on 2.1 acres and offers 650 units. It was designed to blend with the existing neighborhood.

Preserving New Jersey History
Hampshire Real Estate Cos., a private real estate investment firm and self-storage operator, is converting a former armory building in Elizabeth, N.J., to self-storage. The company intends to preserve the exterior of the historic structure, which was built in 1912. It’ll build three stories of storage inside. Construction is expected to begin this year. Once complete, the facility will be managed by Extra Space Storage Inc.
A Traditional Look in New Mexico
Real estate developer Titan Development opened this facility in Santa Fe, N.M., in late 2018. The two-story building comprises 101,000 square feet of climate-controlled space. It’s managed by self-storage real estate investment trust Extra Space Storage Inc. and branded under its name.
