An unfinished play that uses a suburban-desert self-storage facility as its setting is under development by writer Rachel Yong and the Irvington Theater in Irvington, New York, which will host a sold-out reading of the work on Nov. 3 at the Irvington Public Library. First started in 2009, “Statewide Self Storage” is a “tale of fathers and daughters finding compassion and making sense of the stuff we accumulate in our lives,” according to the source.

The event is part of the theater’s Arts Incubator series, which invites live audiences into the creative process behind works in progress. The November reading will feature Yong and director Gregory G. Allen, along with cast members William English, Jenny Fabrizio, Julie Griffin, Drew Lazaroff and Maddie Sledge, according to the source.

“Every few years, after some period of major personal transition, I have revisited the piece, been surprised by what the me of three years before might have stored away or thought valuable, tossed out major chunks, and carried in new ideas and experiences,” Yong told the source. “What’s left, after a very long, slow and private process is, hopefully, a distillation. The play finally feels like it represents where I am today, and I think it’s ready for a little more light shining in.”

Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Yong was previously a member of the Playground, a playwright incubator in California’s Bay Area, where her stories were performed at local theaters as well as the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University. She’s also a founding member of Decent Co., with whom she wrote and performed three solo shows. Other works include the comedy web series “Randee So Dandy” and two short films that screened at the Asian-American International Film Festival.

Founded in 1902, Irvington Theater’s programming includes in-person, offsite events and virtual programming.
