Roof Blown Off Sumiton, AL, Self-Storage Building

High winds this week in Sumiton, Alabama, blew the roof from a self-storage building and sent it careening onto a nearby home. Emergency responders were called to Sumiton Mini Storage early Wednesday morning following reports of straight-line winds. The residents weren’t in the affected house at the time, according to sources.

Jack Bunt, who lives near the facility at 1205 Main St., told sources he heard a loud boom that sounded like an explosion. Building insulation, bricks, chunks of wood and metal were left strewn about the storage property. Community members came together to help the facility operator clean up.

“The community here at Sumiton, everybody gets along, we come together,” Bunt said. “If it takes us to dark to get it done, we will.”

The winds also downed multiple power lines in the area, causing outages. No injuries were reported.
