U-Haul Announces Several Self-Storage Development Projects

Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc., which operates more than 1,200 self-storage facilities across North America, has recently opened or is in the process of developing several new projects. There are three ground-up facilities, four standalone conversions and three expansions. All construction is expected to be complete by the end of next year.

New Builds

U-Haul purchased land in St. Augustine, Fla., on which it plans to build a three-story facility. The parcel is on the south side of Country Road 16A and the north side of Florida State Road 16. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Mill Creek will comprise 100,000 square feet in more than 1,000 units.

Another ground-up project is slated for 5.59 acres at 1519 Beasie Road in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The five-story U-Haul Moving & Storage of New Salem will comprise more than 130,000 square feet in 800-plus interior units.

The company received approval to build U-Haul of Lower Macungie-Trexlertown in Lower Macungie, Pa. Plans for 7785 Spring Creek Road include a three-story building comprising 82,000 square feet and a 5,000-square-foot structure.

Conversions

After nearly a year, U-Haul opened its conversion of a former Kmart store in Memphis, Tenn. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Raleigh at 3201 Austin Peay Highway offers more than 700 units.

The company is refurbishing another Kmart in Latrobe, Pa. It acquired the 90,243-square-foot space at 1072 Mountain Laurel Plaza in April. Erected in 1995, the original building was vacated in 2018. Once complete, U-Haul Moving & Storage of Latrobe will offer 700 indoor units.

In Mansfield, Ohio, U-Haul is converting a former Big Lots and a Value City Furniture store to storage. The company purchased the 9.5-acre property at 1140 Park Ave. earlier this year. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Mansfield will encompass 83,208 square feet in 600 indoor units.

U-Haul is also converting an unoccupied commercial building in Madison, Tenn. It purchased the former HHgregg Electronics store at 1515 Gallatin Pike N. in January. Once complete, the 71,232-square-foot building will offer 700 indoor units.

Expansions

U-Haul is expanding its facility at 924 S. 108th St. in West Allis, Wis. The company acquired the 79,805-square-foot Home Owners Bargain Outlet on the abutting 7.43-acre property to accommodate the work. Originally opened in 1980, the property will soon offer 700 self-storage units.

U-Haul in Louisville, Ky., will also be expanded following the purchase of a 1.72-acre abutting property just southeast of the store at 4612 Preston Highway. Built in 1977, the existing facility doesn’t currently offer self-storage. Preliminary construction plans call for a multi-story building with 800 interior and drive-up units.

U-Haul is also expanding its Clarksville, Tenn., facility with the acquisition of a used-car lot adjacent to U-Haul Moving & Storage of Clarksville at 712 Providence Blvd. The 1.29-acre abutting property is just west of the store. Plans include a multi-story building containing 300 units.
