Man Sentenced to 3 Years for Burglary Bender at Rising Sun, MD, Self-Storage Facility

Ethan Michael Springel received a three-year sentence after making a plea deal in a self-storage burglary case in which he faced 140 criminal charges. Springel, 45, was accused of stealing stored items worth thousands of dollars from about 25 units at Johnston’s Mini Storage in Rising Sun, Maryland. The crimes took place Dec. 4-9, 2020, according to the source.

Springel entered an Alfred plea to “conspiracy to commit a theft scheme to steal more than $1,500 and less than $25,000,” the source reported. This allows the defendant to maintain innocence while acknowledging the state has enough evidence to convict.

Cecil County Circuit Court Jude William W. Davis Jr. credited Springel with serving about nine months in a county detention center after he was arrested in December 2020. He was also given two years of supervised probation after completing his sentence. He’s scheduled to appear at a restitution hearing on Nov. 28.

Prosecutors last year made all 140 charges against 45-year-old co-defendant Monica Gray Dehaven inactive, though officials have up to three years to decide to prosecute, according to the source.

Johnston’s Mini Storage is operated by Rising Sun Storage, which operates five facilities in Maryland.
