Man Charged With Homicide After Fatally Shooting Wife at Lower Burrell, PA, Self-Storage Facility

A man has been charged with criminal homicide after shooting and killing his wife on Saturday morning outside a unit at a U-Haul self-storage facility in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania. After the incident, he pushed her body into the space at 100 Burrell Plaza, locked the door, and drove to the state police station to turn himself in, according to sources.

The woman has been identified as Kelly Steele, 41, of Apollo, Pennsylvania. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner Sean R. Hribal. The cause and manner of death will be determined following an autopsy, sources reported.

The victim’s husband, 42-year-old Alfred Keith Steele, allegedly admitted to shooting his wife in the back of the head after meeting her at the storage facility to retrieve some clothes from the unit. With blood on his shoes and pants, Steele told police he argued with Kelly about her infidelity. He said he had “just shot and killed” his wife with a semi-automatic pistol stored in the unit. Before locking the door, he took his wife’s purse and phone. Her body was discovered by police at 9 a.m.

Kelly is survived by her mother, Cherie Martin; two children, Emily Steele, 18, and Ean Steele, 23; daughter-in-law, Mikayla Steele; and grandchildren, Bellamy Steele and Benjamin Steele.

“She was loved by many. So many,” Ean Steele said. “All she did was love back. I loved her so much.”

Emily Steele called her mom her best friend. “The light of my life. She cared about everyone more than herself. I’m so empty without her. I love her more than I could ever love a person.”

Kim Bauman, a friend of the victim, said Kelly wasn’t unfaithful. She called the shooting senseless. “He didn’t have to do that. Kelly didn’t deserve that. Nobody does, but Kelly didn’t. Not from him,” said Bauman, who had known Kelly for years.

Steele is being held in a county jail without bail. At the time of his arrest, he was awaiting trial for a January incident in which he allegedly threw a hammer and shards of glass at an officer while fleeing police. Additional criminal charges he’s previously faced include assault, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and public drunkenness, a source reported.
