Man Attacks Miramar, FL, Self-Storage Manager

A manager at Safeguard Self Storage in Miramar, Fla., was forced to defend herself on Sept. 9 when a man jumped over the office counter and demanded that she give him her “panties.” Jacqueline Crawford told a 911 dispatcher that Carlos Rawlins, 55, cornered her behind the counter, where she kicked at him to prevent him from getting closer. Two customers who entered the office during the incident helped Crawford fight off her attacker, according to the police report.

Rawlins continued to demand Crawford’s underwear even after Miramar Police Officer Lilian Velarde arrived, though he insisted he never touched the storage manager. He was arrested on charges of trespassing, assault and obstructing justice.

Rawlins has a criminal record in Broward and Miami-Dade County, Fla., that includes drug and alcohol offenses. According to Broward County Jail records, he was at the Paul Rein Detention Facility on Sept. 3, the source reported.

Founded in 1989 and headquartered in Atlanta, Safeguard operates 75 facilities in Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The company is owned and operated by Morgan Stanley’s Prime Property Fund.
