Burglary, Murder Suspect Found Hiding in Longmont, CO, Self-Storage Unit

Update 10/15/19 – New information has been released about the Longmont, Colo., murder that happened in July, including the victim’s name and other details about the incident.

Gary Hockaday, 80, was stabbed 56 times, according to an autopsy by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office. He had 21 stab wounds on his neck, 30 on his upper left back, four on his upper right back and one to the left shoulder, a source reported. Hockaday’s death has been ruled a homicide. The coroner’s report stated hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease were contributing factors.

Following the stabbing, Rios fled the scene in the couple’s pickup. A bloody knife was also found at the scene, a source reported.

Rios, now 30, has been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree burglary, first-degree assault, motor-vehicle theft, second-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree trespassing, theft, criminal mischief, two habitual-offender sentence enhancers, second-degree burglary of a dwelling and felony menacing, a source reported. His next court appearance is Oct. 31.


7/22/19 – Police arrested a murder suspect on Thursday at a Longmont, Colo., self-storage facility. Isaiah Ismael Rios, 29, was found hiding inside a unit at East Point Mini Storage after having fled the scene of a home burglary where an 80-year-old man was found dead. The suspect was caught after someone reported a suspicious vehicle at the storage property at 12121 Sugar Mill Road. He was taken into custody without incident at 9:30 p.m., according to sources.

Police responded to the home in the 2200 block of Jewel Street just after 6 p.m. The woman who lives there called and said she had just arrived home and couldn’t find her husband, though she saw blood on the carpet. Police conducted a search of the home and discovered the man’s body. His name and cause of death haven’t been released.

Rios faces charges of auto theft, burglary and murder. He also faces charges in two additional burglaries, a source reported.

East Point Mini has been open since 1978, according to its website.
