Andover, KS, Police Shoot Self-Storage Burglary Suspect

A man suspected of breaking into a unit at Secure Self Storage was shot and injured by police officers on Dec. 22 as he attempted to flee in his vehicle. No one else was hurt, according to sources.

Police were called to 809 W. U.S. Highway 54 at 10:40 p.m. to investigate a suspicious person. Four officers approached the man, later identified as Nicholas T. Waggoner, 25, who was inside the space. Though Waggoner claimed his family rented the storage unit, a severed padlock was found in his possession during a search.

When Waggoner was allowed to retrieve his driver’s license from his pickup truck, he instead drove the vehicle in reverse toward the officers. One officer fired at the truck and struck Waggoner. The vehicle then veered down an embankment and crashed.

Waggoner was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. He’s in serious but stable condition, the sources reported.

Founded by David and Sylvia McHam in 1974, Secure Self Storage is a family-owned business that offers traditional self-storage and vehicle storage.
