MK Industries Seeks to Convert Former Target Store to Self-Storage in Austell, GA

Real estate firm MK Industries LLC is seeking approval from Cobb County officials to convert a former Target storage in Austell, Ga., to self-storage. The property at 3757 Floyd Road includes a 98,000-square-foot building on about 5 acres. Venture Homes has also filed an application to build 51 townhomes on 7.3 acres of the store’s parking lot, according to the source. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners discussed the rezoning applications during a Sept. 18 hearing.

If approved, the developments would benefit the community, said Kevin Moore, the attorney representing both applicants. “You’re taking something that’s essentially dormant now, and turning into something that would be beneficial from a residential standpoint as well as a commercial standpoint,” he said.

Built in 1980, the Target store closed 1999 when it moved to its current location at 4125 Austell Road. The property is listed as a “redevelopment site” that would be eligible for incentives from the county, although no such application has been filed, according to Dana Johnson, community-development director.

Based in Doraville, Ga., MK Industries owns more than 280,000 square feet of office, retail and warehouse space, as well as five apartment complexes, in Georgia. The commercial sites are managed by AOK Management.
