40 Dead Cats Found Frozen in Long Island City, NY, Self-Storage Unit

At least 40 dead cats were found frozen inside an auctioned unit at American Self-Storage facility in Long Island City, N.Y., this week. The buyer paid $150 for the contents of the unit, which had gone into default in July after the 66-year-old tenant stopped making payments, according to the source.

Police found the cats inside two 4-by-3-foot freezers. The animals were stacked on top of one another and stuck together, making it difficult for investigators to get a total count. One of the felines had been skinned and left on an aluminum tray, the source reported.

Detectives who opened the freezer were forced to change their clothes following the discovery because of the smell. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took the animals for necropsies. The procedure will likely take a few days because the animals need to thaw first. Authorities will wait for the results to determine if any charges are warranted against the self-storage tenant, the source reported.

Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Tinton Falls, N.J., American Self Storage operates 10 facilities in New Jersey and New York. It offers more than 1 million square feet of storage space in 15,000 units.
