Update 10/7/24 – Another self-storage business is extending support to residents and businesses who have been negatively affected by Hurricane Helene. Properties operated by Absolute Storage Management (ASM) are providing one month of free storage, plus a free unit-door lock and 30 days of free tenant insurance. In addition, all administrative fees are being waived for these tenants. No proof of impact is required, but exclusions apply based on availability, according to a press release.

Founded in 2002, ASM manages 144 self-storage properties in 15 states. Headquartered in Memphis, it has regional offices in Atlanta; Tampa, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina.; and Nashville, Tennessee.

10/2/24 – Several self-storage operators are offering assistance to businesses and residents impacted by Hurricane Helene. Compass Self Storage, Storage Asset Management (SAM) and U-Haul International have designated facilities to provide at least 30 days of free storage to those who need it, according to sources.

Compass will provide free storage at its locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. “Dealing with the damage from this powerful hurricane can be very challenging. We want to help soften the impact by offering one month of free rent for a self-storage unit to anyone dealing with this difficult situation. We will be ready to assist however possible,” said Compass President Todd Amsdell.

Twenty-eight SAM-managed storage facilities in Florida, Georgia, and North and South Carolina are offering two months of free storage. Details vary by location.

U-Haul is providing 30 days of free storage at 432 locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Customers can also take advantage of one month of free rent for the company’s U-Box portable-storage containers.

Hurricane Helene devastated dozens of communities in the Southeast after making landfall in Florida on Sept. 26. The storm ushered in rain and flooding to many regions. At least 135 people have died, and many remain unaccounted for, as roadways are impassable and power sources have been damaged.

Headquartered in Cleveland, Compass operates more than 100 facilities in 15 states. It’s part of the Amsdell family of companies, which specializes in construction, development and management of business parks and self-storage.

Founded in 2010 by Alyssa Quill and Jay Hoke, SAM manages nearly 600 self-storage facilities nationwide. It’s based in York, Pennsylvania.

Established in 1945, Phoenix-based U-Haul owns and manages more than 82 million square feet of storage space nationwide.
