Self Storage Association of Michigan Announces New President, Officers

The Self Storage Association of Michigan (SSAM) has named a new president and officers for 2020-21. Peter Spickenagel, president and CEO of Citizen Storage Management (CSM), will serve as president. He has more than a decade of self-storage industry experience.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to contribute to the overall vision and growth of the association,” Spickenagel said. “I believe the extensive knowledge of the self-storage industry will help influence legislation to best improve the business climate in the self-storage space for our members in the state of Michigan.”

Prior to CSM, Spickenagel was vice president of operations for Storage Pros Management, which operates self-storage facilities and manages them on behalf of other owners. He supervised all operational and revenue-management aspects of the portfolio. During his career, he’s managed and operated 96 properties nationwide, consisting of more than 4 million net rentable square feet in 33,000 units.

Additional SSAM Officers are Chad Lundberg, managing partner for The Storage Group, as vice president; and Jeff Steffani, president of the U-Haul Company of Central Michigan, as treasurer/secretary. Board members include Jim Abraham, owner of Abe’s Storage; Theresa Gallas, Midwest sales manager for Janus International; and Adam Pogoda, director of acquisitions for Pogoda Cos.

SSAM was founded in 2007 by 25 self-storage owners and operators. Through legislation, education and marketing, it works to improve operations for its members and encourage growth in all areas of the industry.

Headquartered in Royal Oak, Mich., CSM operates 10 locations in Michigan, Mississippi and Tennessee. Its portfolio includes 580,000 net rentable square feet in 4,000 units.
