Update 12/20/23 – Lock+Store has partnered with EVCo to provide customers of its Ayer Rajah and Chai Chee self-storage locations with free access to electric-powered moving vans. Tenants can book a van using a mobile app, according to a press release.

EVCo was launched last year by electric-mobility services company Strides-DST, which is a joint venture between Strides Mobility Pte. Ltd. and China-based DST Electric Vehicle Rental. Strides Mobility specializes in electric transportation and logistics solutions, while DST offers a digital platform for commercial electric vehicles, according to a source.

As part of the initiative, Lock+Store will install five electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations at its Chai Chee facility, the release stated.

“The introduction of EV chargers and vans marks a pivotal stride towards realizing our vision for a green future within the self-storage sector,” Ng said. “It not only enhances the customer experience but also addresses their evolving needs, be it for residential relocations or managing e-commerce inventories efficiently.”

10/19/22 – Lock+Store has signed an agreement with Singapore-based Union Solar Pte. Ltd. to mount a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system at its Chai Chee self-storage facility. The company will receive free installation and benefit from energy tariffs of about 20% below its current electricity rates, according to a press release.

Union Solar provides free solar installations to businesses as part of a nationwide initiative, which has a goal of reaching a 2 gigawatt peak of PV capacity by 2030, according to the company website. It’s part of the Union Group of Cos., which also includes Union Power Pte. Ltd., a licensed electricity supplier through Singapore’s Energy Market Authority.

10/12/22 – Lock+Store, a Singapore-based self-storage business operated by General Storage Co. Pte. Ltd., has joined SGRecycle, an initiative by SGPaperRecycle Pte. Ltd. The network of more than 100 locations collects paper waste in exchange for incentives and reward points. As the first self-storage company to join the group, Lock+Store will install a recycling station at its facility on Chai Chee Lane, according to a press release.

Lock+Store will encourage its self-storage tenants and members of the public to dispose of their paper and textile waste at the property. Its participation is part of a larger focus on environmental stewardship and sustainability. The company’s Chai Chee plans also include the installation of solar panels and electronic-vehicle charging bays, and the introduction of an edible garden, which will support the nationwide effort toward food self-sufficiency, the release stated.

Lock+Store operates 13 self-storage facilities in Malaysia and Singapore. General Storage is also the parent company of The Store House self-storage brand in Hong Kong. The organization also provides warehousing, offices and postal services.
