Sturgis Township, MI, Approves Special-Use Permit to Allow Self-Storage Behind Hamilton Harley-Davidson

Real estate developer LWH LLC received unanimous approval from the Sturgis Township, Mich., Planning Commission this week for a special-use permit that will enable it to build a self-storage facility. The company plans to invest $188,000 on two 4,500-square-foot storage buildings that will be erected on a 3-acre parcel fronting White School Road, according to the source. Work on the pre-manufactured structures is scheduled to begin in April and be complete by October.

The 9,000-square-foot facility will be built behind the Hamilton Harley-Davidson retail center, also owned by LWH, near U.S. Highway 12. Although the land is zoned for commercial use, self-storage isn’t specifically included in the classification, making a special-use permit necessary, the source reported.

The planning commission indicated during the hearing that LWH will have to combine several adjacent parcels to accommodate the facility’s proposed site plan and meet required setbacks, according to the source.

An A-1 Self Storage facility operates just north of the proposed development site.
