Cerrillos Self Storage Gets Planning Approval in Santa Fe, NM

The Santa Fe, N.M., Planning Commission granted a special-use permit last week that will allow a self-storage project to exceed the allowable space allowed by city code. Cerrillos Self Storage LLC will be able to add eight storage buildings comprising 98,843 square feet in 104 units on about 4 acres that previously served as a Honda-Subaru dealership. Former property owner Omega Automotive Real Estate had already received city approval to convert the existing 25,326-square-foot building to self-storage at 4480 Cerrillos Road, according to the source.

The special permit was necessary because the expansion of the previous self-storage plan will make the total project larger than the former auto dealership. Though city planners have expressed concern over an increase in storage development and a need for affordable housing, the commission determined that repurposing the commercial property would help preserve land elsewhere for residential use.

“My hope is this will saturate the market and reduce the demand to do storage units on undeveloped land,” said planning commissioner Mark Hogan.

The Cerrillos Road site is toward the back of the Santa Fe Auto Park. It’s fenced with access limited to the main entrance to the auto park, according to the source. The Honda-Subaru dealership moved to another location within the park.
