A-1 Shelters Self Storage received approval last week to add 6.1 acres and new storage structures to an existing location at 2555 Pine Island Road in Cape Coral, Fla. The expansion will extend the property to the north and comprise more than 79,000 square feet of interior storage space and enclosed structures for 145 RVs, according to the source. The facility is currently housed on 7.6 acres and comprises 121,700 square feet between storage units, a management office and an onsite residence for the manager.

The council’s unanimous approval included “several deviations from land-use regulations” and rezoning the property addition to a commercial-park overlay designation, the source reported. Council members approved a 24-foot-high metal wall for a new entrance from Diplomat Parkway, with metal perimeter fencing allowed around the expansion area at 14 feet high.

Founded in 1975, A-1 Shelters is a division of The Kirby Family Properties. It operates three self-storage facilities in Cape Coral and one in North Fort Myers, Fla. The company also owns and manages three office warehouse complexes in Cape Coral, according to its website.
