Construction has begun on a new Hollow Tree Self Storage (HTSS) facility in Darien, Conn. Slated to open this fall, the property at 131 Hollow Tree Ridge Road will offer 800 to 1,000 storage units as well as vehicle and wine storage. It will also feature a solar carport, with the energy produced used to power the facility, according to the source.

Designed by Chris LaVigna of LaVigna Associates, the building will resemble a New England mill building, with the retail office sporting a residential-like façade. The storage units won’t be visible from the road, the source reported.

“Our goal was to create a tasteful design that would complement the character of Darien,” LaVigna said. “We wanted to avoid the harsh, industrial look common to prefab, metal storage buildings in favor a natural color pallet with soft, sandy stucco walls, a well-articulated façade, and elements such as pitched roofs and shade trellises to add depth and interest.”

Larger storage units will be drive-up accessible while smaller, climate-controlled units will be reached by elevator. Security features will include a gated perimeter with electronic access and video cameras.

“Security was a major focus of ours in designing and creating this facility. We are employing the latest technology and have included all the amenities required to accommodate a full-time, live-in property manager,” said John Hertz, a developer on the project.

HTSS will also lease 16-parking spaces to the Noroton Heights Metro-North Railroad station for commuter use.

“We look forward to bringing this beautifully constructed project and much-needed service to the community,” Hertz said.

HTSS developers have more than 30 years of experience in the self-storage industry, the source reported.
