Self-Storage Operator U-Haul Acquires University Mini Storage in Greensboro, NC

Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc., which operates more than 1,300 self-storage locations across North America, has purchased University Mini Storage in Greensboro, N.C., rebranding it as U-Haul Storage at Greensboro Coliseum. The facility at 1560 W. Gate City Blvd. re-opened under the new name on Sept. 29. It comprises 53,700 square feet in 333 indoor storage units, some of which are climate-controlled. It’s near the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and will be remotely operated by U-Haul Moving & Storage at UNCG.

“We are happy to keep an existing building in place. This building was originally built in 1936, and it has seen this area grow over the years. We are committed to lowering our carbon footprint, and our adaptive reuse practices will help us achieve this,” said Jason Grider, president of the U-Haul Co. of Central North Carolina.

The acquisition of the Greensboro property was driven by U-Haul’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, according to the source. U-Haul’s adaptive reuse of existing structures eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities diminish their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, U-Haul officials said.

Established in 1945, U-Haul has more than 44 million square feet of storage space at its owned facilities throughout North America.
