Storeland Self Storage of Culpeper, VA, Gets Approval to Add Vehicle Storage

Storeland Self Storage received approval from county officials on Tuesday to add vehicle storage to its facility in Culpeper, Va. The board of supervisors voted 5–2 to allow the facility to store boats and utility vehicles on an unused portion of the property at 18424 Gate Road, according to the source.

The request by Storeland owner Steve McLean was tabled last month after he was unable to attend the board’s meeting and answer questions. Although the parcel is zoned commercial, McLean needed county approval for outdoor storage because the site is designated as an “entrance corridor” on U.S. Route 29, the source reported. There was also some concern the vehicle-storage area would turn into a junkyard.

The conditional permit includes several stipulations, including the need for screening along the portion of the property that faces Lover’s Lane, which is in view of a residential area. It also comes with a three-year time limit, which was suggested by supervisor Jack Frazier, who represents the Cedar Mountain magisterial district in which the business operates. “I think we just need to make sure we can control the activities there,” Frazier said.

Supervisor Gary Deal also recommended the construction of a berm with vegetation to hide the stored vehicles from the view of motorists on Route 29. However, county administrator John Egertson noted the area facing Route 29 had already been approved at an earlier site-plan meeting. Deal and supervisor Steve Walker voted against the petition.

Resident Jens Tholand was the only person to speak against the project. He objected to adding vehicle storage to the property, the landscaping and lighting.

Storeland Self Storage offers climate-controlled and drive-up storage. Property amenities include a kiosk, a retail store that sells moving and packing supplies, and video cameras.
