Quality Care Self Storage Continues to Expand in Iowa

Iowa self-storage operator Quality Care is growing its business with expansions to existing facilities as well as new development. The company now operates five locations in the state, with two more expected to open within the next couple of years.

The operator recently expanded its site at 980 W. Penn St. in North Libery, Iowa, by adding a satellite location across the street. The main facility includes more than 500 storage units. The satellite will eventually include walk-in cedar closets to store seasonal clothing, according to the source.

Quality Care also completed the second phase of its facility in Tiffin, Iowa, last week. It includes drive-up, climate-controlled units. The entire site was designed to provide maneuverability for large moving trucks, the source reported.

Company owner Dean Moore plans to grow his portfolio. “We’re looking at two more sites in Iowa City,” he said. “We hope to have them completed within 18 to 24 months.”

Moore, who has a background in the hotel and restaurant industries, has designed his facilities to resemble upscale hotels. The offices feature large entranceways, Persian rugs, Mission-style furniture, antique-style gas stoves or fireplaces, wood trim, and roll-top desks. Employees wear business attire and offer each customer a beverage. Additional amenities include keyless entry, a self-service kiosk and free use of the company’s moving truck. The company also offers mailbox services, package acceptance, and moving and packing supplies.

The North Liberty property also features an old-fashioned, coin-operated, mechanical horse named “Champion” in its lobby.

“I figure I’m still in the hospitality business. We want people to feel at home and know we’ll take good care of their stuff,” said Moore, who entered the storage industry 20 years ago when he purchased a 200-unit facility in Coralville, Iowa. The company now owns two sites in the city and a combined 3,000 units at all of its locations. Moore’s wife, Alyssa, oversees daily operation of the sites.

Moore also owns Quality Care, the Nature Care Company, an Iowa-based landscaping business he launched in 1980. His signature 1951 Chevy truck and his dog, Vic, became branding for the firm, said Moore, who once had more than 70 similar trucks in operation as part of his business. A few of the vehicles are now on display at his various locations.
