Stor-Age Property REIT Ltd., which operates 37 self-storage facilities in South Africa, recently hosted a two-day staff conference that included multiple destinations and team-building activities. More than 140 staff members attended the event, which coincided with the company’s 10th anniversary.

Details of the excursion were kept a secret from all employees except a select few. Prior to boarding buses, each participant was given a conference pack that included flip-flops, a red poncho and some food. They then traveled to West Coast National Park, a destination area that includes a lagoon and offshore islands. After being sorted into teams, employees undertook their first task: to create a sandcastle in the image of Machu Picchu, an Incan citadel in the Andes Mountains of Peru.

Following lunch, the teams were split into sessions of “reflection and introspection” on the beach, which allowed them to take stock of their goals and focus for the upcoming year, according to a Stor-Age blog. They were then treated to a keynote at the Geelbek Restaurant by motivational speaker Hein Wagner, who was born blind but has competed in many athletic tournaments.

“Hein proved to be both a highlight and a source of inspiration for many of our staff members,” the blog stated. “Hein truly challenged each and every staff member with a powerful thought to ponder by saying, ‘If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change.’”

Staff then headed to their final destination for day one, Club Mykonos Resort, for an awards dinner. CEO Gavin Lucas described the evening as “a standout aspect of the event and a great way to acknowledge staff and give recognition.” Live musical performances from Majozi and The Kiffness followed.

Day two included a series of pirate-themed challenges and a scavenger hunt on the beach. The pink team won the competition, finding a buried treasure chest containing smaller cash-filled boxes. The day ended with a seafood buffet lunch at Die Strandloper Restaurant.

“The great thing about it is that it’s about the people and bringing everybody together,” said conference director Stephen Lucas.

Stor-Age became South Africa’s first self-storage real estate investment trust listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in November. Headquartered in Cape Town, it operates self-storage facilities in six South African cities. Established in 2006 by the Lucas family, it’s the operator appointed by Stor-Age Property Fund Managers Pty. Ltd. to manage and market the property portfolio owned by Stor-Age Property Holdings Pty. Ltd.
