Northside Self Storage of Meriden, CT, Supports Home Renovation for Family in Need

Northside Self Storage in Meriden, Conn., recently donated free use of a portable-storage container to a family whose home was being renovated by volunteers. Spirit of Giving Inc., a nonprofit founded by local emergency-services agencies, spearheaded the facelift of the Hailu-McIver home on Newtown Street. The five-member family, who was nominated to receive the restoration by a third party, had been forced from the dilapidated residence and were staying with family members.

Spirit of Giving organized dozens of volunteers to repair the home in December and January. LaRosa Construction Co. volunteered to gut the structure and donated materials. Haberli Electric LLC checked the wiring, and The Carabetta Cos. replaced the flooring and plumbing. A leaky roof was also fixed. All materials and labor were provided for free. The house was also decorated and furnished by volunteers, including members of the city’s building, fire, housing and police departments.

The family moved back into the residence on Jan. 16.

Founded in 2001, Spirit of Giving is a division of Meriden Emergency Services. The charity provides financial aid and hosts an annual holiday drive to collect clothing, toys and other donations.

Founded more than 20 years ago, Northside Self Storage offers traditional self-storage as well as Go Mini portable-storage units. It was opened by Bob and Jackie Preece and is now managed by their daughter, Renee, and her husband, Michael.
