U-Haul Acquires, Expands Water Tower Self Storage in Salisbury, MD

Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc. has purchased Water Tower Self Storage in Salisbury, Md., as well as an abutting property on which it recently completed an expansion. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Salisbury at 1402 N. Salisbury Blvd. officially opened in June with 324 interior, climate-controlled units. An expansion of the property at 1326 N. Salisbury Blvd. added 13 buildings and 30,595 net rentable square feet in 234 drive-up units, according to a company press release.

"The expansion has given us the ability to offer a different product altogether," said Brenda Cox, general manager. "Some customers prefer being able to drive up to the unit. Not only does it offer a smaller price point, but also the reputation that U-Haul brings to the storage community."

U-Haul is currently renovating the buildings’ exteriors, the release stated. Property amenities include electronic gate access, extended hours, towing equipment, truck and trailer rentals, and the sale of moving and packing supplies. U-Box portable-storage containers will be available for rental in the coming months.

"Adding the drive-up storage is exciting. It gives us another avenue to serve more customers," said Dominic Catalano, president of the U-Haul Co. of South Philadelphia. "This is a booming city and the need for more storage is here."

Salisbury is the largest city on Maryland's eastern shore, according to the release. The city's downtown area is being revitalized by the conversion of waterfront parking lots to commercial space, condos and retail to attract more businesses and residents.

The acquisition of the Salisbury properties was driven by U-Haul’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, the release stated. U-Haul’s adaptive reuse of existing structures eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities diminish their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, U-Haul officials said.

Established in 1945, U-Haul has more than 44 million square feet of storage space at more than 1,200 owned facilities throughout North America.
