Uncle Bob's Self Storage Opens New Location on Historic Harris Semiconductor Site in Palm Bay, FL

Update 1/15/16 – A plaque was unveiled on Thursday during the opening of an Uncle Bob’s Self Storage facility in Palm Bay, Fla., commemorating the building’s history as the former home to Harris Semiconductor. Harris engineers were involved in developing military and space technologies, including Tomahawk missiles and the Cassini-Huygens deep-space probe of Saturn, according to the source.

When crews gutted the building, they uncovered a large safe that once held gold and classified documents, the source reported. After learning the safe’s history and the type of work that had been conducted inside the building, Fred Sutton, managing partner at Sutton Properties, wanted to preserve the story with a plaque.

The unveiling was attended by former Harris Semiconductor employees, who were asked to stand and be recognized. Political and business leaders also attended, including Robin Fisher, Brevard County, Fla., commissioner, and Sheldon Fox, senior vice president of Harris Corp., which owned the semiconductor business before it was divested in a spin-off to Intersil, according to the source. "It certainly makes you proud to be part of Harris Corporation, and all the work that was done, and that continues to be done," Fox said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was also held, marking the opening of the Uncle Bob’s location. Sutton Properties also hosted an open house at its Palm Bay development. The event included food trucks and tours of Uncle Bob’s and the nearby Innovation Centre, a high-tech office complex.

11/4/15 – Uncle Bob's Self Storage plans to open a new climate-controlled facility in January in a historic building in Palm Bay, Fla. The property at 2465 Palm Bay Road N.E. formerly housed a number of companies, including Harris-Intertype Corp., Intersil Corp. and Radiation Inc.

Uncle Bob’s, as well as the adjacent SF Innovation Centre, will honor Harris-Intertype and Intersil by installing a brass plaque during their grand-opening ceremonies in 2016, according to the source. The previous businesses stored gold and classified documents. Sutton Properties owns the land for both sites.

The REIT determined the building would be ideal for self-storage after a large safe was found within it, the source reported.

Uncle Bob’s is the operating brand for Sovran Self Storage Inc., a real estate investment trust. Based in Buffalo, N.Y., Sovran operates more than 500 facilities in 25 states.
