Commissioners in Bryan County, Ga., gave conditional-use approval for a self-storage facility on Veterans Memorial Parkway between county-annexed land and the entrance to the Buckhead East subdivision in Richmond Hill, Ga. The Stop N Stor Storage location will be built on 6 acres and have a resident-manager apartment, according to the source.

Commissioners approved the project after discussing its possible impact on nearby residents and concerns regarding lighting and signage. Although a county ordinance allows signage up to 24 feet high, commissioner Rick Gardner thought that was too tall for the storage facility, which will front Highway 144. Terry Coleman of the Coleman Co., a Savannah-based engineering and surveying firm, told officials the sign would adhere to the ordinance, but Stop N Stor CEO Alan Dasher said he would be agreeable to signage around 14 or 18 feet tall.

The property is part of a 500-acre planned-unit development (PUD) approved in 2008. The commission approved the conditional use in part because another self-storage facility on Highway 144 Spur is also part of the PUD, the source reported.

A Buckhead East resident objected to the project, saying he and other residents learned of the proposal 24 hours before the public meeting.

Stop N Stor has six self-storage locations in Hinesville, Port Wentworth and Savannah, Ga.
