Self-Storage Operator Seeks Rezoning for Facility on 8 Mile Road in Wayne, MI

Bill Davis, owner of Livonia Storage Units, has requested a rezoning for a parcel of land on 8 Mile Road in Wayne, Mich., to build a new self-storage facility. City officials are reviewing the storage proposal for 28153 8 Mile, just west of the Grand River Academy. The land, which once housed a shopping center, was vacant for many years before the charter school took over half of the lot and opened about a year ago, according the source.

“This property’s been looked at over the years for many different kinds of uses, but nobody’s ever decided they wanted it,” said James McCann, the attorney who represented Livonia Storage at a July planning-commission meeting regarding the rezoning proposal. The proximity to the school limits the types of businesses that could operate on the land, McCann said. The low traffic counts for a self-storage facility make it an ideal business for the parcel, he added.

The school also supports the self-storage proposal. “They’ve been involved in the design of the proposal, the traffic layout, and this particular use and are supportive of it,” McCann said.

The facility would include about 400 units and employ a few staff members, according to Davis, who operates a storage facility in Ann Arbor, Mich. “It is a valuable use for the community,” Davis said during the July meeting.

A public hearing was held on Sept. 2, and the council is expected to discuss the storage proposal later this fall.
