Meathead Movers of CA to Expand Staff and Self-Storage Locations

Meathead Movers, which operates Meathead Mini Storage in San Luis Obispo, is looking to hire 200 employees at its four offices by year-end, nearly doubling its current staff of 200 part-time and 50 full-time employees. The company also plans to add more California offices and self-storage at other locations, according to company president and CEO Aaron Steed. It has dispatch centers in Fresno, Orange County, San Luis Obispo and Ventura County.

Meathead Movers was founded in 1997 by Aaron Steed and his brother, Evan, who needed a way to make money while going to high school and playing sports. The company offers onsite, local and long-distance moving, as well as concierge and packing services. Its team of student-athlete “Meatheads” handles the moves while “Princess Packers” professionally pack items for customers. Both arms of the company employ students working their way through college.

The company prides itself on helping students pursue their career paths, the source reported. “The people that work for us aren’t career movers; they’re destined to do bigger and better things with their life,” said Steed. “The experiences they learn here help them with that.” Employee perks include onsite gyms, professional massages, flexible work schedules and onsite computer labs in which to do homework.

Meathead Movers handles more than 10,000 moves per year, according to the source, making it the largest independent moving company in California and the largest local mover in Central and Southern California. The privately held company generates annual revenue between $10 million and $11 million, growing between 30 percent and 40 percent annually for the past four years, Steed said.

Meathead Movers has been on the “Inc. 5000” list for fastest-growing companies for the past three years. It’s also been honored at the White House as one of 100 companies that impact the economy and can inspire young entrepreneurs to start their own businesses.

As a result of a non-equity partnership created in 2014 with Gentle Giant Moving Co., Meathead Movers now handle moves nationwide. Gentle Giant is the largest independent mover on the East Coast, according to the source.

Meathead considers itself an eco-friendly company. In addition to supporting wide-scale recycling, it uses sustainable building features such LED lights, double-paned windows and heavy insulation. The company is planting more than 280 trees and shrubs at its San Luis Obispo property, all of which are indigenous and drought-resistant and will be irrigated with recycled water. To minimize its trucks’ impact on the earth, Meathead Movers uses biodiesel and has installed chips that govern truck speed to use the fuel cleanly and efficiently.

For every box packed by its staff, Princess Packers donates $1 to The Cinderella Fund, which provides grants to children whose families are suffering hardship. The money is used to provide resources that nurture the recipient’s development in the arts, athletics and education. The fund is administered by nonprofits in the communities the company serves.

Meathead Mini Storage was opened in 2010 at 3600 S. Higuera St., now the company’s headquarters. The Steed brothers developed the 6-acre property, building its 117,000-square-foot storage facility, which offers climate control, a concierge service, packing and moving supplies, and wine storage.
