Valet Self-Storage Startup Spacebox Launches in Hong Kong

Spacebox Ltd., a Hong Kong-based startup business specializing in valet self-storage services, launched last November, offering pickup and delivery service throughout the region, except for outlying islands, according to the company website. Spacebox uses an online platform that allows customers to schedule free item pickup, maintain an image catalog of belongings, and schedule delivery of items home.

Similar to other valet-style storage operators, the company offers by-the-bin storage targeted at residents who live in dense urban environments and don’t have adequate home storage. Customers pay $49 HKD per standard bin per month or $99 HKD for oversized items or a standard wardrobe box. The company currently has capacity to store 40,000 bins at its three warehouses in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories, according to the source.

Although customers aren’t permitted to visit the secure warehouses, Spacebox is working to establish “collection points” throughout the city to accommodate customers who wish to retrieve items themselves rather than schedule home delivery, according to the company website. Home-delivery service is free, as long as customers are willing to wait up to 48 hours for their belongings. Express delivery is available for a fee, according to the source.

The company, founded by brothers Lewis and Stuart Cerne, currently operates with a team of seven that includes two software programmers. The company had more than 100 customers two months after launching, the source reported.

Future offerings could include a shared library service for items as well as the ability for customers to designate boxes for charitable donation, according to the source.

Spacebox is the latest valet-storage operator to emerge in the Hong Kong market. Hongkong Storage, a traditional self-storage operator with 15 facilities in the region, offers pickup and delivery services through its Yes-Storage program. In addition, Vault Dragon recently launched with service in Hong Kong and Singapore.
