McCarthys Removals Completes £2M Self-Storage Conversion in Wakefield, England

Update 6/11/15 – McCarthy’s Storage World Wakefield is now open for business. The two-story self-storage facility comprises 40,000 square feet in more than 400 units. It offers 24-hour access, drive-up units and a retail assortment of moving supplies, according to the source. The facility employs four people.

“We had been looking for the right premises in Wakefield for some time. We felt the city needed cost-effective, flexible storage facilities, and also the service complements the removals side of our business, for which we already have a strong customer base in the area,” Mike McCarthy, managing director, told the source.

In addition to residential customers, the storage business will target business tenants. “In recent years, with the sharp increase in the number of Internet-based businesses, our storage has allowed entrepreneurs to expand out of the spare bedroom and keep stock and equipment at our units,” McCarthy added. “It’s a much more cost-effective alternative to having to rent office or retail space, as all business rates, rent and utilities are included.”

2/19/15 – U.K. self-storage operator McCarthy’s Removals Ltd. is investing £2 million to convert the former Magnet kitchen showroom and John Peters furniture store in Wakefield, England, into self-storage. Branded as McCarthy’s Storage World Wakefield, the 21,000-square-foot building will be the largest of the company’s three locations, according to the source.

The facility will offer 500 storage units in various sizes, targeting business and residential customers. “We already have a strong customer base in the Wakefield area for the removals side of the business, but we were very aware that there were no easily accessible storage facilities within the city,” Mike McCarthy, managing director, told the source. "The two services often complement each other, and so we have been looking for suitable premises to invest in within the area for some time.”

The property is on a main road, Kirkgate, and is within walking distance of the city center, McCarthy said. The project is expected to be complete by Easter and create at least six new jobs, the source reported.

Founded in 1970, McCarthy’s offers residential and commercial moving and storage services. It currently operates self-storage facilities in Harrogate and Leeds, England.
