A-1 Self Storage Opens New Facility on Historical Site in San Juan Capistrano

A-1 Self Storage, which operates 48 facilities in California, opened its newest facility on a historical site in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. The property at 33000 Valle Road encompasses 72,904 square feet of storage space and 494 units and is adjacent to Interstate 5 off San Juan Creek Road. Property amenities include extended access hours via a 24-hour rental/payment kiosk.

“We designed this facility with our customers’ needs in mind,” said Brian Caster, president and CEO. “We wanted to add value to the San Juan Capistrano neighborhood with the right kind of storage at the right price. We’re excited to be a part of the community.”

The facility features a plaque honoring John (Don Juan) Forster, an English immigrant and one of California’s largest land owners. The 32-by-40-inch plate of polished black granite features vintage photos of the property and a description of its history, according to an article in “The Orange County Register.” It was approved by the city's Cultural Heritage Commission before construction began on the self-storage facility as part of the Historic Depiction Program, which requires new development to honor the city's past. The plaque will be available to the public for viewing.

Forster emigrated from England in 1833, according to the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society. He began acquiring land in the 1840s, including parcels in Rancho Trabuco and Rancho Mission Viejo. In 1844, Forster and James McKinley purchased the old ruins of Mission of San Juan Capistrano for $710. The Forster family had cattle-grazing rights to the land that A-1 Self Storage now occupies.

A-1 Self Storage is a division of the Caster Cos., a third-generation, family-owned company headquartered in Southern California since 1959. Caster Cos. develops and manages A-1 Self Storage, A-1 Car Storage and other commercial properties in California. Its portfolio includes more than 4 million square feet of real estate.
