Proposed Self-Storage Development Nears Approval in Arlington County, VA

A proposed self-storage facility in Arlington County, Va., is nearing approval at a site currently occupied by Redman Fleet Services, a towing and truck service. The property at 2631 Shirlington Road near the city of Shirlington was once earmarked for a Walmart, but those plans fell through.

The building permit for what is expected to be a five-story Shirlington Self Storage location has been approved by county staff, but a zoning application for the facility was tentatively rejected. County officials said an ongoing subdivision process will need to be completed before zoning for the facility can be approved, according to the source.

Walmart’s interest in the lot prompted the county to change the zoning at the site in 2011. In addition to the trucking company, the property currently houses a two-story warehouse and car storage lot. The warehouse has been approved for demolition.
