Two soldiers have been arrested in connection with a Sept. 11 break-in at a self-storage facility in Richland, N.Y. The burglary also resulted in property damage at Ontario Mini Storage. Investigators said locks had been cut from the self-storage units.

Oswego County sheriffs deputies arrested Kevin R. Umphred, 21, of 10334 4th Armored Division Drive, Sept. 16. Hes been charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief, and third-degree criminal trespass. Deputies also arrested Johnathan T. Stemen, 21, of Moreno, Calif. He was charged with criminal mischief.

Investigators believe Umphred was involved in a series of break-ins with Pfc. Russell C. Marcum, 20, a soldier from Fort Drum, who escaped military custody and led police on a three-day manhunt. Marcum turned himself in Sept. 17. Investigators believe the two men were also involved in the Sept. 10 break-in at Watertown Power Sports, where a pair of racing boots and $130 in cash was stolen.
