Boulder Storage Operators See Surge in Student Business

Self-storage operators in Boulder, Colo., are enjoying a surge in business as thousands of University of Colorado students look for places to store their stuff this summer. With the semester ending this week, local storage facilities are bracing themselves for the influx.

AAA Storage on East Pearl Street hired extra help to ensure all vacant units are ready to rent. General Manager Van Vasquez said the facility usually rents between 300 and 400 units this time of year.

As competition for student rentals intensifies, local storage operators broaden their marketing strategies, handing out fliers on campus and advertising online. U-Store-It, with two facilities in the area, is targeting CU students on Facebook.

College Student Storage, founded 13 years ago by Michael Shelhamer while he was attending CU, has a full range of services for students who are moving out of dorms. For a flat fee, the company will pick up, store and re-deliver belongings to students’ new off-campus addresses.
