Archaeologists have completed excavation of an 800-year-old archaeological site next to Green Valley Self Storage in Arizona. The research team was hired by the Pima County Department of Transportation to dig the area, once occupied by the prehistoric Hohokam people, before it is paved as part of a county road-widening project. Archaeologists worked on the site from late March until April 21, collecting more than 500 artifacts.
 
The Continental Hohokam Site was discovered in 1953, and consists of at least 56 Hohokam house ruins dating to about 1200, according to Archaeologist Allen Dart. The recent excavation entailed work on four Hohokam dwellings, one of which is near Green Valley Self Storage. Dart said he and his crew will eventually hand the artifacts over to the Arizona State Museum at the University of Arizona for research.
 
More than 100 archaeological sites have been discovered in the Green Valley area, according to Arizona State Museum records.
