In "Natural Selections" in Men's Health's Best Life magazine, February 2009 issue, epidemiologist David Jacobs calls these combinations food synergy. He says evolution has tested food pairings and that's why they're healthier for us.

The right food combinations can help people lose weight, prevent cancer, and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, the article states. Here are the food combinations discussed in the article:
