Lockers for Literacy Program Launch by Oroville RV/Boat & Self Storage

In July, Oroville RV/Boat & Self Storage of California launched an initiative to collect donations and provide free storage to victims of the summer’s Butte County fires. Thanks to the generosity of the local community, the facility collected enough bounty to establish another philanthropic program: Lockers for Literacy, which will provide local schools with funds to purchase new textbooks and library books.

The original charity campaign generated enough donated goods to fill 15 storage units, according to facility owner Mike Cunningham. Even with clothing, feeding and furnishing more than 70 families, there were thousands of remaining items. The management team decided to hold a “Dollar a Bag” sale during Sept. 19-21, with the proceeds directed to the new program. In three days, they raised $430.

The facility was assisted in its effort by the Tri-County Treatment Center, which sorted through the items in preparation for the event. Cunningham and his crew posted fliers and posters around town. In addition, he has vowed to match all funds raised through the sale and contribute the first $25 from any storage unit rental to Lockers for Literacy.
