The Jackson (Mich.) Racquet Club is no longer for members only—now it’s open to everyone as a public self-storage facility. The club, which opened in 1975, had been closed since 2002. It re-opened as A&W Storage East by Donna and Tim Blake in July.

With a background in the heating and cooling business and another storage facility—A&W West—operational since 1999, the Blakes saw potential for the 60,000-square-foot building as a climate-controlled facility. The new site also includes a covered drive-thru that protects customers from the elements. Since opening, eight of the facility’s 60 units have rented.

According to an article in The Jackson Citizen Patriot, the Blakes are investing more than $1 million in the business but saving as much as possible by doing a lot of the work themselves. Tim is a mechanical contractor and his son, Bill, has construction experience. Expansion plans include 80 additional units in the coming months and hundreds more in the years ahead.
