A Maryland man who recently purchased the contents of a defaulted self-storage unit for $300 was surprised to find several items belonging to former NBA star Dikembe Mutombo. The unit reportedly belonged to one of Mutombos brothers, who went back to the Congo to deal with a family issue and neglected to stay current on payments.
The successful bidder, Adrian Petrus, told entertainment news source TMZ the unit included signed basketballs and other memorabilia, shoes, jerseys, trading cards and photos of the eight-time All-Star with celebrities such as Michael Jackson and Nelson Mandela. Works of art signed by Mutombos brother were also in the unit.
Petrus said he tried to contact Mutombo to sell the items back to him but did not hear back from the athlete. Instead, Petrus indicated he would sell the Mutombo items on eBay.
Famous for his shot blocking, the former center played 18 seasons in the NBA for six teams, including the Denver Nuggets and Atlanta Hawks. Mutombo was a four-time Defensive Player of the Year and averaged 9.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks for his career.
