Americans May Need Three Shots to Keep Flu Away

08/07/2009

Americans may need three shots this fall to keep flu bugs at bay.

After the emergence of the H1N1 virus killed hundreds around the world, vaccine manufacturers went to work to create a new shot. But rather than just one shot as with the seasonal flu vaccine, people will likely get two doses of the swine flu vaccine.

Health officials are also encouraging people to line up for flu shots early. About half of the more than 120 million doses of seasonal flu vaccines will be available by the end of August, with the rest trickling in the following month. The swine flu vaccine will have limited availability in September, with more product in October and November.
