Summer Fires Sweep Through Self-Storage Sites

08/12/2008

Fires devastated several self-storage facilities this week, including sites in Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi and New Jersey.

Yesterday, 16 units were burned at AAAA Self Storage in Buford, Ga. The fire is under investigation and damages are yet to be tallied.

At Metro Self Storage in Mililani, Hawaii, flames raged through a 10-by-30-foot storage area yesterday. According to Honolulu Fire Department Captain Terry Seelig, the fire caused approximately $15,000 in damage to the structure and $2,000 in damage to personal property.

On Saturday, volunteer firefighters in Lauderdale County, Miss., responded to a fire at Queen City Mini Storage. Approximately 20 units were damaged, but no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is yet unknown.

Another fire claimed more than 100 units and injured a firefighter at Advanced Self Storage in Hardyston, N.J., on Friday, engulfing a 16,000-square-foot building that housed 105 units. The firefighter was sent to the hospital for severe smoke inhalation. In addition to tenant belongings, three antique cars valued at more than $100,000 and his own personal property were destroyed in the blaze, facility owner Bob Van Zile told The Star-Ledger. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
