Study: Global Warming Worse Than Expected

A new study shows global warming is actually worse than scientists orginally thought.

The research, conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and published this month in Journal of Climate, predicts a 90 percent probability that worldwide surface temperatures will rise more than 9 degrees (F) by 2100, compared to a previous 2003 MIT study that forecast a rise of just more than 4 degrees.

In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change forecast a 2 to 11 degree temperature rise by 2100 based on a variety of different greenhouse-gas-emissions scenarios.

The study's co-author says that unless greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, there is significantly more risk than scientists previously estimated.
