Self-Storage in South Africa Experiences Steady Growth
(Pictured: XtraSpace Self Storage in Durban Central, South Africa.) Though local consumers are still being educated about the benefits of self-storage, South Africa is experiencing steady growth as established operators expand their footprint and new ones enter the market. The rapid expansion of cities has been a huge contributor to the industry’s growth. The country has an estimated 70,000 self-storage units, most of which are garage style. XtraSpace, one of the larger operators, owns 17 local facilities. This year, the company opened three new locations and purchased a former Toys R Us building in Durban it plans to convert.
